Don’t aim for success if you want it; just do what you love and believe in, and it will come naturally. ~ David Frost via www.brainyquote.com
There are numerous success quotes, and you may have heard or read many of them. “Success is just around the next corner” is another you probably heard. As a new online business owner you may have doubts about ever seeing that success and may be wondering just how far away that ‘corner’ is because there seems to be so much to do.

Having been online since the fall of 2008, I agree that there are several things you must do and several skills you’ll need to develop to achieve success in your online business. Always remember, You can do it. It has been done successfully by thousands of business owners who are Internet Marketers, as well as business professionals who see the value of adding an online component to their marketing.

Success starts with you! It starts with how you feel on the inside. The following are five areas to do a self-check in order to determine on a scale of 1-5, with 5 being the highest, if you’re a 5, or if there is room for improvement:

Cultivate a Positive Attitude:  It’s important to cultivate a positive attitude in how you approach your online business and your life in general.  ‘Cultivate’ means that this attitude may not come naturally; you may have to work very hard to achieve it.  You may have to change your mindset and learn positive thinking; then nourish this positive attitude so that it becomes a natural part of your character.

Develop a Business Mentality:  While there are some internet marketers who had successful offline business and are now transferring those skills online, the majority of persons who start an online business had no previous business training.  In addition, because the rules are different in marketing online, there is a learning curve.

Research indicates that people who succeed are people who approach their online business with a business mentality instead of treating it as if it were a hobby.  Allocate time to work in your business at the outset so eventually you can work on your business.  Identify what you need to do on a regular basis and set a schedule of when to do it.

Have Fun With Your Business:  This is not a contradiction to the previous point.  When you enjoy doing what you need to do, it will not feel like work.  Take time to find the fun in your business so you’ll enjoy doing the things that make for success.  Be excited about taking action to move forward. When you find your passion and combine that with a desire to change lives, you can find the fun in your business.

Expect Success:  There is thin line between success and failure.  Persons the world over have sabotaged their success by thinking they could never achieve success like So and So.  Invariably we compare ourselves with someone who is doing very well forgetting that they likely were at the point new business owners are at right now.  Their success was as a result of identifying what they needed to do, how to do it, and get help from a mentor or a coach to provide guidance and accountability.

“Actually, I’m an overnight success, but it took twenty years.” Monty Hall

Be Realistic:  While success may be just around the corner, it does not come overnight.  You must be realistic about how quickly your business will grow.  There are no shortcuts and any thoughts of getting rich on the Internet in a short time will only lead to disappointment. Work is required and sticking to one thing and getting good at it before moving to the next thing will lay a foundation for success.

Sir Richard Branson gave sound advice, “It is normal for entrepreneurs to feel out of control and worry that the rug could be pulled from underneath them at any moment. These are growing pains for every ambitious founder trying to build a business from scratch, and ones that every successful entrepreneur will have experienced at some point.”

Starting an online business can be challenging, but working with someone who has been where you are, has overcome huge challenges, and is willing to hold your hand and guide you can help to give you the momentum to move your business forward more quickly.

Very true, Mike. Some people are afraid of success. Imagine that? But they’re afraid of the responsibilities that success will bring. It does start within. Thank you.

  1. Hi Yvonne,

Great post. I especially love the point about developing a business mentality. Many people do not treat their online business as they would a brick and mortar business, and this leads to failure. Thanks for sharing this post.

Thank you, Davina. Another thing I’ve found while working with clients, and frankly, I had that challenge too before I adjusted my mindset, as that some people are willing to work harder for someone else than they’ll work for themselves. It takes an attitude and mindset adjustment to appreciate that one’s online business is no less a business because it’s a virtual world.

  2. For me, the ‘Mont Hall’ quote says it all…
“Actually, I’m an overnight success, but it took twenty years”

I went for life coaching and believe it or not, I identified with the hard cold fact that in my mindset “I am afraid of success”. Since then I would very hard to adjust my mindset and keep a more positive approach using positive reinforcement etc

    Great post!

Duane, Thank you for sharing how you personally felt. I wrote in a comment a few moments ago that I’ve worked with people who are afraid of success, even before I read your comments. You confirmed effectively that it is very real. The important thing is that you recognize it and you’ve taken steps to correct it by cultivating a positive mindset. Wishing you the best so that you’ll stay on the positive path and freely embrace the successes that come into your life, whatever that means for you.
