“People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it.” ~ Simon Sinek
What Is Subtle Selling?
Subtle selling, or as some call it, covert selling, is about alignment, not manipulation.
It’s the practice of weaving natural product mentions, resource suggestions, or service offerings into your blog posts in a way that feels organic, like a trusted friend sharing what worked for them, rather than a salesperson making a pitch.
Here’s a simple example:
Instead of saying, “Sign up for my email course today—it’s only $47!”, you might write,
“If you’re working on simplifying your marketing, this is one of the tools I use with my mentoring clients. You can check it out here if you feel it might support your journey.”
You’re still offering a product, but it’s wrapped in value, trust, and freedom.
If you’re a mature professional or entrepreneur who’s been yearning for a high-impact, heart-centered mentoring experience where you can make meaningful progress without the overwhelm, I invite you to take a peek at my upcoming Momentum Mentoring Circle.

If you’ve been blogging for a while and you’re wondering why your high-traffic posts aren’t turning into steady income, you’re not alone. Many purpose-driven entrepreneurs, especially those of us who serve from the heart, find ourselves in that very position.
We pour hours into writing valuable content. We show up consistently to serve, teach, and inspire. And yet, the financial return doesn’t always reflect the time and heart we invest.
It’s not that your content isn’t good. It may, in fact, be excellent.
We should always want to allow our readers to continue learning from us or connect with us further. However, the disconnect often lies in how we present opportunities to take the next step. The old-school “Buy Now!” approach may feel pushy or out of alignment, and it often is.
Today’s readers are discerning. They’ve been pitched from every angle, and they can spot a sales message a mile away. If it feels forced, their trust wavers, and trust is the currency we’re really working with.
So how do you build trust and create income without compromising your values?
Let me introduce you to what I call the art of subtle selling, a relationship-first approach to content that invites your readers to work with you, rather than pressuring them into a decision.
Why Subtle Sells (Even Better)
“Sell the problem you solve, not the product.” — Unknown
At the heart of every purchase is a person with a need.
When your blog post meets that need—offering clarity, inspiration, or a small shift in mindset—you create a moment of connection. And that moment is far more powerful than any flashy call to action.
Subtle selling works because it honors your reader’s autonomy. It says: “I see you. I understand your struggle. Here’s something that may help, if and when you’re ready.”
It’s not about withholding offers. It’s about offering with grace.
You may be wondering if this approach works. Yes, this approach does convert—often better than overt pitching—because your reader feels safe, seen, and respected.
According to a study by Edelman, 81% of consumers say that trust in a brand is a deciding factor in their buying decisions.

How to Apply Subtle Selling in Your Blog
Here’s how to put this into practice in your own writing:
-
Lead with value.
Make sure your blog post solves a real problem or answers a meaningful question. Offer generous insights before even thinking about the sale.
-
Mention tools and products in context.
If you recommend something, let it be a natural part of your story or solution. For example: “One thing that helped me streamline this process was [tool name], which I still use today.”
-
Link sparingly but purposefully.
Add affiliate or product links only when they directly support the message. Too many links feel like a pitch; one well-placed link feels like a recommendation.
-
Invite, don’t push.
Use language like: “If it resonates with you,” “This may be worth exploring,” or “Here’s what’s worked for others I’ve mentored.”
-
Respect the reader’s journey.
Know that not everyone will click. And that’s okay. You’re building trust, and that’s the long game.

Trust First. Sales Follow.
I often say, “Marketing brings people to your door, but relationships invite them in and make them feel at home.”
Your blog isn’t just a content platform. It’s a place where trust is built—one helpful post, one gentle suggestion at a time.
The truth is, you can sell with heart. You can serve and profit. You can build a blog that earns income while aligning with your values. And it starts with shifting from pushing to guiding. Let your next blog post be an invitation—not a pitch. Don’t forget to read my blog post on “Stop Selling, Start Serving“.

“Trust is built with consistency.” ~ Lincoln Chafee
Keep showing up with value. Keep writing with heart. And over time, your readers won’t just read your words. They’ll act on them, share them, and trust you to guide their next step. That’s the true art of subtle selling.
