When you reach midlife, you carry with you a lifetime of learning. Every job, every relationship, every challenge, and every joy has shaped who you are today. Far from holding you back, those years of experience are your strongest advantage when it comes to building or growing a business.
Experience Wins
Experience wins because it transforms years of learning into a powerful business advantage. Each decision, success, and challenge adds to your perspective, helping you recognize opportunities and avoid costly mistakes. This depth of knowledge builds trust and credibility, showing clients and partners that you have the wisdom to guide them with confidence.
In business, experience wins by strengthening relationships and fostering authentic connections. People are drawn to leaders who combine proven skills with genuine care, as this combination fosters loyalty and long-term success. From trust-building tips to connection strategies, your lived experience is the foundation for meaningful growth in both business and community.
Here are three reasons why your experience wins in business, and how you can use it to move forward with confidence.
Experience Builds Trust
Trust is the foundation of any successful business relationship. People want to know they can rely on you, and experience naturally communicates that assurance.
When I started my first job at the age of 16 in a commercial bank, I was asked to sign a confidentiality agreement. By the time I was 18 and promoted to Manager’s Secretary, I had access to the financial records of many well-known figures in the community. Their information remained safe because I understood the importance of protecting their privacy. Later, in Human Resources, I handled sensitive employee information with the same care.
That same commitment to trust continues today in my work with clients. They share personal and business details, confident that what they say stays private. Your years of experience carry a similar story. The way you’ve handled responsibilities and relationships over time gives people confidence in who you are—and that trust is what allows businesses to grow.
Experience Provides Perspective
Running a business often means making decisions every day. Experience brings clarity to those choices.
Over the years, I have made decisions that affected my family, my business, and my clients. Some created excellent results, while others became opportunities for learning. Each one added to my perspective and gave me a clearer sense of what truly matters. This perspective allows you to see possibilities that others may miss. You can evaluate opportunities with wisdom, recognizing what aligns with your values and vision. As a coach and mentor, I love helping others use their own perspective to make confident choices that bring the results they want.
Experience Strengthens Connections
Business is built on relationships, and experience gives you a rich foundation for creating and sustaining them.
During my 14 years as a beauty and image consultant with Mary Kay, I learned how meaningful personal connections can be. My very first customer stayed with me throughout those years. I sent her handwritten cards each year—on the anniversary of her first purchase and on her wedding anniversary. She often told me she looked forward to those notes because they showed she was remembered.
Many of my customers became loyal friends. When my mother passed away, several attended her memorial service, and one even sent a check as a gesture of love and support. That kind of loyalty comes from genuine relationships. Your ability to connect and care for others is one of the greatest gifts your experience gives you. It’s a strength that builds lasting businesses and communities.
