When I started my online business almost 18 years ago, I noticed something I couldn’t ignore.
Several people who met me at networking events became clients or attended my local and online workshops. I often say that my online business initially grew from the offline relationships I built through networking events and business associations.
Yet one pattern kept emerging.
People who only visited my website weren’t always taking the next step.
The information was there, and my services were clearly explained. Yet something wasn’t connecting. My website communicated what I did, but it didn’t always communicate who I was. People wanted to know whether I was someone they could trust.
Over the years, technology has transformed the way we communicate. Today, artificial intelligence can draft emails, answer customer questions, write articles, and help us accomplish in minutes what once took hours.
Those innovations have changed how we do business. But they haven’t changed one important truth. People still choose to do business with people they trust.
“Marketing may bring people to your door. Relationships invite them in and make them feel at home.”
That’s a belief I’ve held for much of my working life.
Long before I became a business owner, I learned the importance of building genuine relationships. At sixteen years old, I began working in a commercial bank where I quickly discovered that people remembered far more than an efficient transaction. They remembered how you treated them. Throughout my corporate career and now as a business owner, that lesson has remained unchanged.
The challenge wasn’t learning the value of connection. It was learning how to communicate that same warmth, authenticity, and genuine interest through a website and online content.
Why Trust Begins Before the First Conversation
Credibility begins long before the first conversation.
People aren’t simply looking for information about your products or services.
They’re quietly asking themselves questions such as:
-
Can I trust this person?
-
Do they understand my situation?
-
Will they genuinely care about helping me?
-
Will they genuinely care about helping me?
Those questions are often answered before someone ever schedules a consultation, replies to an email, or clicks a “Contact” button.
đź”° BrenĂ© Brown beautifully describes connection as “the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued; when they can give and receive without judgment; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship.”
While she was speaking about human relationships, I’ve found that her words apply just as powerfully in business.
When people feel seen, understood, and valued, trust begins to grow. And where trust grows, relationships—and businesses—grow with it.

Connection Is Built in the Small Moments
Looking back, I can see that the difference wasn’t better marketing. It was communicating online with the same warmth and authenticity I naturally brought to every conversation.
For years, I had built relationships by listening carefully, asking thoughtful questions, remembering details that mattered, and showing a genuine interest in the people I served. Those weren’t marketing techniques. They had become habits through decades of working with people.
When I finally recognized what my website was missing, I also realized something encouraging. I didn’t need to become someone different online. I simply needed to communicate more like the person I already was.
đź”° Instead of asking, “How can I better explain what I do?” I began asking a different question: “How can I help someone feel understood before we’ve ever had a conversation?”
That insight influenced every article, every newsletter, every email, and every page I wrote thereafter.
I’ve also found that the strongest business relationships are rarely built through one grand gesture. More often, they grow through small, consistent acts of genuine care.
People remember the business owner who follows up after the project is finished, the thoughtful email that wasn’t trying to sell anything.
They remember the professional who listened more than they spoke and remembered something important months later. Those moments may seem small. Yet they’re often the moments that build lasting trust.

One Relationship at a Time
When I think about the businesses that have earned my loyalty over the years, I rarely remember their advertising campaigns or clever marketing messages. I remember how they made me feel.
I remember the business owner who took time to listen before offering a solution. The professional who followed up simply to see how I was doing. The company that treated me like a person instead of a transaction. Those small acts left a lasting impression, and they’re the same moments we create in our own businesses.
Every thoughtful email, every meaningful conversation, every promise we keep, and every act of genuine kindness becomes another opportunity to strengthen connection. Over time, those moments last far longer than any single sale.
Technology will continue to evolve. New marketing tools will emerge. Artificial intelligence will become even more capable. I welcome those advances because they can help us work more efficiently and serve people more effectively.
But one thing will never change. People want to know that they matter.
When we communicate in ways that reflect those qualities, we do more than attract clients—we build confidence that leads to trust. And trust is the foundation of every lasting relationship.
That’s why I still believe that the strongest businesses are built through genuine human connection.
As you think about your own business this week, perhaps the most important question isn’t, “How can I reach more people?” Perhaps it’s this:
🌿 “How can I help one more person feel seen, understood, and valued today?”
The answer may be simpler than you think.
One thoughtful conversation. One genuine follow-up. One small act of kindness. One relationship at a time.
